HEBAT bacaan modules

Assalamualaikum and good day dear readers!

hm_reader

‘HEBAT’ as it sounds like…

Today, I’m going to share a lot of HEBAT bacaan modules for teachers (or soon to be teachers) out there. HEBAT or known as  ‘Hayati, Eksplorasi Berfikir Aras Tinggi’ is actually a set of modules designed to improve the teaching and learning of reading. Basically, this program is done in order to prepare our fellow students for the future PISA test on 2018, due to the shocking result on 2012 PISA rank. Not only that, it is also hoped that through this program, students are able to be independent readers by mastering reading skills and higher order thinking skills (HOTS) in solving problems and responding towards any issues.

There are 20 modules altogether. Each module represents different levels of learners. Something that I love about these modules is there are complete lesson plan for each units, together with the materials. In short, teachers out there are lucky enough to have those materials being prepared for them. I was also quite shocked to see YouTube links being attached  in those modules!

Resepi : Sambal petai ikan bilis rangup mama Dee

Secukup rasa!

Hm… Rasa pelik pula bila taip skema-skema ni. Ayat bahasa melayu saya kedengaran pelik sekali. Ish! Malaslah taip formal-formal sangat ni. Okay, let’s keep it casual yah? Eheh.

Resipinya mudah sahaja.

petai-in-sambal-final17

Lebih kurang macam ini lah rupa sambal petai ikan bilis resipi mama saya tu. Ikan bilisnya rangup! Nak ratah makan macam tu sahaja pun enak!

*p/s: Kuantiti yang dianggarkan adalah sesuai untuk satu hidangan, a.k.a. satu mangkuk

Bahan-bahan

Bahan yang dikisar:

  • Cili kering (Rebus terlebih dahulu)- segenggam
  • Bawang besar- 1 biji
  • Bawang putih- 2 atau 3 ulas
  • Belacan- 1 sudu kecil

Bahan lain:

  • Petai
  • Ikan bilis halus
  • Sos tomato
  • Gula melaka- 1 sudu kecil (pakai agak je)
  • Gula – 1 sudu besar (pakai agak je)
  • Garam- Pakai agak je ye (mohon rasa sebelum hidang)
  • Air asam jawa(Sedikit je, dalam 2-3 sudu besar)
  • Air masak (secukupnya)

Cara-cara penyediaan:

  1. Goreng ikan bilis sehingga garing. Ketepikan.
  2. Dengan menggunakan minyak goreng ikan  tadi, masukkan bahan-bahan yang dikisar. Kacau sebati dan masukkan gula melaka.
  3. Kemudian, masukkan sos tomato dan gula. Kacau dan tunggu sehingga pecah minyak*.
  4. Setelah kelihatan minyak timbul (a.k.a. pecah minyak), masukkan petai. Kacaukan. Tunggu sebentar sehingga minyak timbul lagi. Tambahkan air asam jawa dan air masak jika sambal kelihatan terlalu kering. Tambahkan sedikit garam.

Well, c’mon! Depends on your preferences yah?! 🙂

A good advice for those who are still afraid of cooking :p (Like I did)

Selamat mencuba!

First posting in Felda Tenggaroh

23

As someone who did not travel a lot, I was not familiar with Johor state. In fact, I could even count with my own fingers on numbers of time I visited this state before. To be honest, most of my classmates in TESL from Kelantan or Terengganu requested for their own states, including me. As expected, we did not manage to get our desired locations, instead, most of the east coast people are posted to Johor.

When I checked my result on SPP, of course, I felt so nervous thinking whether I will get the chance to be a teacher or not. I was so grateful that I got posted, even not in my own state. Trying to be positive, I told myself that I need to stay out of my comfort zone and take it as a challenge by living in a new place.

johor_full_map_font_station

If you ask Johorians about the district of  Mersing, most people will think of a small town, a very remote place in the state of Johor. Well, in my case, I thought of Mersing as a nice place which located near the beach, facing the South China Sea. It would have been so wonderful to be living next to the beach. However, my idea about Mersing was not the same as the day before. I just knew that I was sent to a remote place.  I think it is worse. I was posted to a Felda (a place surrounded by palm estate). My first impression was it is a remote area, a place where you hardly even find a shop or to buy things. It took me 40 minutes to reach the school from Mersing town.

moving-out-after-divorce-7-tips-to-make-your-new-place-feel-like-home-quickly-2

As we reached the school, I was fascinated by the beautiful musolla. It is finely decorated in and out. I went to the office and met the school pricipal with other two new teachers. I was lucky that the principal had already arranged a place for us to stay. Then, we moved into the house located nearby. It was quite shocking to see that the house that we rent was empty. Totally empty, except for the sink in the kitchen. Thank God that I brought along a mattress, a pillow to put my head on, and some cutlery to be used. My housemate and I sat for hours in the living room doing nothing, thinking of our own fate being sent here. As I scrolled through Facebook and Instagram, I think we were lucky enough to have a place to stay when some of our friends were still renting at hotel.

After three months of staying and teaching in a new place, I think I can cope quite well here with my friends. We even have more furniture and things after several weeks we stayed here. To be honest, I am so thankful that I was posted here. The nature is a bit different due to different exposure and environment as compared to schools that are nearby the city or town. However, I take that as a challenge for me to utilize every single chance that I have in making them understand English and use it as much as they can. I hope I can keep this spirit until the end of my service… Hahah!

My advice to the next batch or future teachers who are about to get posted; know what you are doing. I am reminding myself as well to be prepared for any future conditions that I am about to face. Most importantly, to try our best in anything that we do. Real life is not the same as the one that you watch in Malay drama or movies… When you got back home, sitting on a nice couch, watching TV, your housemate makes a cup of coffee for you, bla, bla, bla… It’s nonsense! We (and most of the teachers) started with zero. And I told myself that I will remember the time when I lived in a tough situation. It makes you stronger, and appreciate things that you have later on.

‘Till then!

Good luck!

Just like a butterfly

istock_000013010529_medium_623_stanley45

It is a cycle,

Life isn’t stagnant,

That always change,

From one to another.

Sometimes it can be nice,

Sometimes it can be bad,

There are times when you are at your best,

But there are also times when you are at your worst!

One thing I believe,

When bad things happen,

There are good things ahead,

And I’m sure it’s true.

Our life is like a cycle,

Just like butterflies,

First you need to be on your own,

Only then you are free to explore things.

The first stage is the hardest,

The second becomes easier,

The next stage becomes better,

While the last is the best!

Just like a butterfly,

First you’re just an egg and stays in a place,

Next you’re a crawling caterpillar,

Then imprisoned in chrysalis to find strength.

Moving out slowly and carefully,

Trying to break the pupa and see the world,

Finally flying out freely,

Elegantly, happily!

Moving wings as far as you could,

Sucking honey from diverse types of flowers,

See a different new world,

And most importantly, you’re imprisoned!

You’re just free…

Current update

tumblr_static__640_v2

Hello everyone! It’s the second of Ramadhan in the year of 2016, and I am totally excited about it. We should make our days better than yesterday (well, at least dreaming of having one).

I am totally sorry because I haven’t been updating this blog for quite some time. After I graduated and worked as a tuition teacher, my life wasn’t as busy as the time when I started working at a private school. Yes, been killing myself with two jobs! Hahah…

It was very tiring, really… Sometimes I felt like quitting from one of it, but I didn’t. Until my boss asked me to have some break during this holy month of Ramadhan from any tuition classes. I’m so glad as I can focus on one job at a time… This is such a blessing!! 😀

So after this long school holiday, I’ll be focusing mainly on school. I’ll be teaching English subject for form 1 and form 2 students, and Science subject for form 5 students. Yes! I am teaching science! *pats on my back*

Some of you might be thinking;

“How on earth a TESL graduate can teach science subject. SPM pulak tuh!”

Well, lemme make this clear… Most teachers out there (even in government school) are also teaching subjects which are not their major. When I did my practicum during my degree, I met an English teacher. Well, her  English is good, and she could teach well too! To my surprise, she is not a TESL graduate. Yep, she’s not. In fact, she is a teacher who is specialized in science… However, due to her good reputation and results her students achieved in English subject, she still need to teach English until now (well, I think until she retired from being a teacher because she’s already master the syllabus and teaching skills. haha).

So how’s it going after teaching at an Islamic private school for almost 5 months…?

I’ll say… I survived, maybe…? Yeah, it’s tough to teach a subject that you are not familiar with (I was a science stream student when I was in secondary school, so it shouldn’t be a problem). But sometimes, I need to study and do some research before I teach as those information are no longer stored at the back of my head… Especially chemistry! I struggled a lot with that subject. However, I still love biology and physics the most! (Except the calculating part. I hate maths…)

So! Back to my first time experience teaching science subject at a private school… The school laboratory had just finished the renovation part, but it is not fully furnished yet. No beakers, test-tubes, bunsen burner, chemicals, and what not. My students always request to have an experiment, but we have some problems with the materials. Instead, before the school break started, I told them to build a volcano model each group and bring them after school. We’ll be doing a very simple experiment on chemical reactions using baking soda and vinegar.

volcano-7639

Pour the vinegar into the baking soda and see how it reacts!

Another student suggested to make another experiment (this one is also famous on Youtube- the mentos and coke challenge!!). So I agreed and we’ll see how it works!

But we really need a spacious space for the experiment. ahha… I don’t know how it’s going to be like.

mentos-coke-o

Okay, this guy is insane… Never try this at school, kids. If you really want to get yourself hurt, do it at home. I won’t be responsible for that. >_<

‘Till then! ❤

😉

Trying out new things

Have you ever felt nervous while trying out new things..?

Going to a new place, making a presentation for the first time, meeting someone that you do not know before this, or even cooking for the first time might be a nightmare, especially for someone who is not used to break their usual habits.

I am that kind of person. Sometimes I am too afraid of trying out something different in life. Most of the time I will do that with one or more companions. Sometimes with my close friends, or with someone that has the same interests and goals as I do.

new year

I don’t usually do resolutions, but sometimes, I do… It’s because it makes us more focused. Well, even in Islam, we’re encouraged to do daily self-reflection before we go to sleep, and even during each time of prayer. We return to the real purpose of life, on why we are created and who are we actually worshiping… So, having a list of new year resolution is more like a trend. So I have mine, a list that constantly reminds me of things that I need to improve.  Not really because of trend, but I just need something fresh every single day, so that I feel purposeful, and making my life meaningful. Well, it takes time to find what you really want, need, and can do… But never ever give up finding those things that you want & have to do in life! 🙂

Each day is a gift. So, live your life to the fullest! ❤

More language games!

In my previous post, I already mentioned that we’re having English months at a tuition center… So the lesson would be less formal and I discovered that KIDS LOVE GAMES SO MUCH! Yeah, so do we. Who hates games, right?

Hence, I tried to discover some practical games that I can do in class with my students. Please check out this website for more ideas in which I think mostly can be done easily in the real classroom. 🙂

I tried one of the games suggested from the website and the students just love it! Psst! They do love surprises and the guessing-kind-of-thing!

tumblr_static_tumblr_static_8iy9se3olpgk0coogc4w8wwgg_640

1. Pictionary game (Focus on vocabulary)

Preparation:

  • Prepare the words in small papers and fold them. Put into a small box.
paper words

Like this! (P/s: I wrote the meaning in Malay language in case they don’t know the meaning.)

“Now let’s start playing, shall we?”

  • Give the instructions to students. It is such an easy and relaxing game. A student has to come out and pick a piece of paper. Open it up, and without saying the word, the person has to draw whatever is written on the board. Meanwhile, the other friends have to guess the word. Easy-peasy!

2015-11-26 20.42.50

Based on my observation, they really enjoy the game. Even the quiet one started to take part in the game. 🙂

2. Snakes and ladders game (Main focus: Grammar-Articles)

I found this game in the form 2 text book (page 86). You can always photocopy and paste it on a thick board so it will be long-lasting, and can be repeatedly used!

Since the game is based on the application of students’ knowledge on articles (a, an, the), I explained a little bit about articles, the rules, and about how and when to use them. Only after that we play this snake and ladders game!

snake

Make sure you have dice and tokens beforehand!

3. Sentence makers game

Okay, I just created the name of this game… I don’t know what to call it. But basically, you just need a coin and tokens.

  • Students can spin or flip the coin in the air, and see whether they get a tail or a head. If one gets a head, he has to move two squares, and if he gets a tail, just move one step forward.
  • When you’re on the square, read the topic stated (E.g.: Vehicles). Students have to think of a type of vehicle (E.g.: Bus) and try to make a correct sentence using that word.
  • If the sentence is proper, the player can flip the coin again. If they got it wrong, the teacher corrects the sentence and other player continues the game.
  • The first person to reach the finish line wins the game! 🙂

2015-12-04 11.16.04

All it takes is just some effort to prepare the materials. What’s important is the students enjoy and learn something (hopefully).

Good luck!

Final year reflection (Part 2)

My first semester of the final year did not work well at first. I admit, I did less planning and decided to just go with the flow. I did not expect for tonnes of homework that I was about to receive that semester. There was no planning at all, I did not list down all my homework, and most of the time I got myself confused and less organized. I could not focus when I started to do my assignments. I think of things hardly- which actually can be done just in an hour. Instead, it took me hours in front of my laptop, without any progress. Well, I call it as the most unproductive semester ever. Haha.

However, I am still thankful for feeling that way. I learned that I need to put things in order, see things in a different perspective. And most importantly- JUST DO IT! Procrastination always happen when you tend to delay your work which are due to several internal and external factors. As for me, I did have both.

List down things that you need to settle, and a time frame.

Observation Days

Throughout this week, all of us have at least one observation by lecturers from our kuliyyah. I woke up yesterday morning and suddenly heard my phone rang.

So I said to myself; “Who would’ve sent a message as early as 6 in the morning? My friends would rather use whatsapp instead…”.

Then I quickly grabbed my phone and sat on my bed. “It’s Dr. B!”

I remembered that I texted him the day before, informing about my form 4 class having an exam. It was quite shocking to read his message saying; “Can you create one? Inform me when I can come to observe you today.”

I was speechless. I couldn’t think of anything other than saying yes or no. I whined loudly until my other room mates from other compartments heard my voice. I told Alya my biggest surprise of the day, and she told me to inform Dr.B that I will check for any relief from form 1 class. It was a really shocking day, and I couldn’t speak a lot that morning.

Once we reached the school compound, I headed straight to the curriculum room (the place that we stay after we leave the teachers’ room due to the unavailability of tables). Then, I checked the examination timetable, and asked my form 4 students to stay at school from 1 pm until 1.30 pm, and do some revision on the Tanjong Rhu short story together with me. I felt a little relief as the classroom monitor, Kamal, agreed. He’s a good boy anyway, and will never says no. LOL. But still, I felt a bit guilty for not informing earlier. Well, I cannot blame myself for that! :p It’s an uncontrollable situation…

So I spent the whole morning preparing for the lesson plan by hand and used the available materials prepared by the students a few weeks before. In the previous class, I asked the form 4 students to seat in groups and prepared scripts as well as some drawings about the Tanjong Rhu short story. It is quite surprising to see their ability in creating those things in a detailed and creative way!

It’s kind of interesting to see how much your students can perform. 🙂

Alhamdulillah, the observation went well. The comments were okay, but there are still certain things that I need to improve. Plus, it was a really last minute preparation, so I did not think I could perform really well yesterday. Even some of the students ran away from the class. They ran as fast as lighting, and I could see them from the third level of the building. Luckily, nobody was injured that afternoon… Thank God! I don’t really mind about those ‘missing’ students as it was a last minute ‘notice’, but as students, I really think that they need to have some sense of respect to the teacher. Learning at school is not all about scoring high marks in every single test, but how much you learn from each class, and the blessings by the teacher herself. I am reminding myself as well to not complain so much after this 😦

By afternoon, Fatin and Unni came to school with their lunch packs. Fatin seemed to look so worried. I already knew it, another last minute notice for observation by Dr.F. From here, I learned that we need to be 100% prepared on every single day before we step into the school compound. Expect for the unexpected peeps! So dear juniors, make sure you prepare for your own goodness! 😉

As for today, Alya had an observation by a British guy, Dr.S. Yes, I do love the way he taught us literature course during our second year of degree. He guided us on how to think and love reading, and of course loving the language itself! I am quite surprise to see how much I’ve improved after his class. I even wrote poems in my blog while expressing my feelings. I also do not read the same way again. Every single line that I read in novels is meaningful and I believe that each word means something else, more than just the literal meaning.

I wrote this poem on 2 years back 😀

Mother knows best!

It was the examination week,

As usual,

I was sitting in this hot-windy room,

Fan was rotating at the highest speed,

Staring over white papers,

Reading texts,

Highlighting keywords,

Writing short notes,

Until one moment,

I got bored.

I took out my laptop,

Pushed over the power button,

I continued reading few bundles of white papers again,

And when everything was ready,

I clicked on the My Document’s file,

Looking for a folder entitled Love,

I dragged the cursor to the first picture,

The screen displayed an image,

Full with happiness,

Sitting on a blue couch,

Everyone was wearing traditional Malay outfits,

It was Eid celebration!

Oh, how I miss my family.

I felt my grey-coloured steel table vibrating,

The airplanes song started to play,

The piano music is very fascinating,

I like it,

It was my phone that was vibrating,

I took a glance at it,

The contact name Abah displayed on the screen,

Hurray! Mama called me,

There was a feeling of excitement,

I knew that it was the sixths sense of a mother,

“Mother knows best!”,

As what the Rapunzel’s mother said…

Alya taught literature just now. I love Dr. S’s comments. Very constructive, and at the same time, we managed to get some ideas on how teaching English should be. He asked Alya a very simple, important, yet deep philosophical question;

“How do you learn Malay language?”

I was sitting at a desk, listening to their conversation attentively (I’m sorry Alya! I did wrote down what he said! Haha. It felt like attending a lecture again, at school.)

He said, learning English is just the same as you learn the Malay language; you don’t really learn it in class, but you use it in your daily life. So, if you want your students to be good enough in using the language, let them practice it. As Alya taught her students about literature component during the observation day, Dr. S advised her to think of making the students to love reading. Hence, we need to think of new ways on how to make our students become independent readers, even when they are out of the class. Motivating students to read is not something easy, even we ourselves as teachers have some issues in becoming independent readers. Haha. I do read, sometimes, when I have free time… But to be consistent in reading is a big challenge for us. *Duh! That’s just an excuse!* :p

Another common mistakes that practicum teachers do at school is to dominate the lesson. Most lecturers will advise us to make the lesson more student-centered rather than teacher-centered. Yes, we do understand what those two approaches mean, but the problem is when it comes to the application of the theory. Sometimes you think that what you do in class is already student-centered, but it is actually not. Experiences teach us a lot, so bear with it. We might make some mistakes. Learn from those mistakes, and try to improve more.

*Fighting!!!*

I think I reflect myself so much during this practicum. As for the second observation by Dr. B, I received the same comments from him. I have a monotonous voice and lack of hands-on activities by the students (Of course I will get that sort of comments. He did not even stayed until the end of the lesson! He missed the hands-on activity part. *Sigh*). It’s kind of funny to see your students’ reactions during the presence of an outsider in your class. All of sudden, everyone behaved nicely and paid attention to the lesson. Yeah, of course some of them ‘managed’ to fall asleep in my class due to extreme tiredness at 1 o’clock. You can just imagine listening to a lecture in a warm room and getting sweat all over your body. I also cannot concentrate in a lesson with that kind of condition. Well I guess I need activities that involve movements for my students. So student centered y’ols!

2 more weeks to go, and I am not ready to graduate from IIUM. I kind of like this school, and the students. Though sometimes I feel a bit stressed out due to unpredictable behaviours of certain students, but I think I still need to move on. Sorry dear students, I do not think that I can stay until the end of this year. I need to go back to my hometown, and do what I really want to do. As for the upcoming teachers’ day (which is 2 days in time), I would like to wish “Happt Teachers’ Day” to all teachers from any parts of the world, especially those who used to teach me until I become who I am today. I am really grateful to have each one of you as my teachers. And my students, who taught me on how to be a good teacher. You are my teachers as well. Not to forget, my parents who taught me on how to speak for the first time- both of you are my teachers forever. Love ya! ❤

Till then… 🙂

Bosnia: The Country Life

It’s pretty awesome to travel around the world and produce documentaries, like this one here by Zahariz. At least he contributes somethin, isn’t he? I’m proud of him… Well done! 🙂

Diary Of A Traveller

A short interview on a man who live in a countryside in Cazin, northern part of Bosnia & Herzegovina… revealing the daily life in the countryside, rebuilding life 20 years after the Yugoslavia war. Out here, they value quality time more than money. They talk slower, the walk slower… really living the here and now…

Sorry for the bad audio since I didn’t plan to make film here in Bosnia, it was just coincidence. Didn’t take the audio recorder with me, no additional audio equipments, no extra rig for my camera… nothing, my camera was completely naked.
